The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid half-a-percent, or 126 points, to close at 25,191.
The S&P 500 fell 15 points, ending trading lower for 12 out of the past 14 sessions at 2,740.
The Nasdaq dropped zero-point-four peercent to 7,437.
European markets took a stronger hit.
Britain's FTSE 100 dropped one-and-a-quarter-percent.
Germanys's DAX almost two-point-two percent and France's CAC 40 lost one-point-seven percent.
