14. Muay Boran
Description
Muay Boran is the traditional martial art of Thailand and serves as the historical foundation for the modern combat sport known as Muay Thai. While it may not be the oldest martial art in the region, Muay Boran is arguably the most culturally significant, having gained recognition for its effectiveness in both personal combat and warfare.
Developed for battlefield application, Muay Boran was designed to be a practical and efficient fighting system, incorporating powerful strikes using the fists, elbows, knees, and shins. It was often practiced alongside Krabi Krabong, Thailand’s traditional weapon-based martial art, which includes the use of swords, staffs, and other bladed weapons. Together, these disciplines formed a comprehensive combat system employed by Thai warriors during times of conflict.
Over time, Muay Boran evolved from a military-focused fighting art into a more structured discipline, eventually giving rise to Muay Thai, which adapted its techniques for sport and competition.
