As consumers have become more informed about VOC levels in wood finishes, manufacturers have responded by offering lower VOC products. To protect against misleading advertising on labels, the EPA sets certain VOC guidelines that producers must meet before they can label their products as “low VOC” or “zero VOC” finishes. Although some consumer advocates question the accuracy of these numbers, VOC ratings can still help us compare the relative toxicity of one wood finish to another.
