Diodontidae (Porcupinefish)

Porcupinefish are similar to Pufferfish, and both families are in the Order Tetraodontiformes, which is in the Class Actinopterygii. Porcupinefish have more-noticable spines on their bodies than Pufferfish. These spines are visible even when the fish is in its normal deflated state.

Porcupinefish are nocturnal, but can be seen during the daytime by divers. Spot-Fin Porcupinefish can be seen in large groups in the daytime during mating season. They are more active at sunrise and sunset, eating crustaceans by using their strong beaks to open shells. The beaks are created by having teeth fused together, which is similar to that of Parrotfish.
