Clown Anemonefish

Known to many people simply as 'Nemo' or the clownfish, this is Amphiprion ocellaris. Its common name is the Clown Anemonefish. Some people refer to it as the False Anemonefish or the False Percula, but these names don't make much sense. Amphiprion percula is a similar-looking species that has thicker black lines that separate its white and orange areas, and it lives in northern Queensland, Australia. A.ocellaris (Nemo / Clown Anemonefish) live in SouthEast Asia and the northern coastline of Australia's Northern Territory.

Like all species of anemonefish, the Clown Anemonefish lives in a matriarchal group which has one dominant female that is the largest. Then there is one breeding male, and the rest are subordinate males. If anything happens to the female, the main male will transform to become female and grow in size to take her place. Thenone of the other males will be promoted to become the breeding male.

Anemonefish live in their host anemones in a symbiotic relationship - one in which both parties benefit. The stinging cells of the anemone protect the fish from predators. The fish continuously rub themselves on the anemone's stinging tentacles to 'refresh' their tolerance, a bit like a vaccine booster jab. And in return, the anemone gets any food that the fish drop.
