Over the last several years, a considerable body of work has emerged proving what yoga practitioners have known for centuries: Yoga prevents and reverses anxiety, even the most chronic and severe cases.
Acute anxiety is a result of long-term mental stress and tension that results in a near- constant feeling of impending disaster and loss of control, even when there is no outward evidence of such.

How Yoga Relieves Chronic Anxiety
The deep asanas in yoga, combined with the intentional inhalation and exhalations, immediately provide a sense of peace and calmness in the practitioner. The science behind yoga is that there is an immediate and measurable reduction in cortisol and adrenaline, two stress chemicals found excessively in those suffering from anxiety.
Yoga also strengthens and balances the body’s hormonal state, which is almost always in a state of chaos in the body of a person with intense anxiety. Hormones are our body’s chemical messengers directly responsible for our mood and feelings of well being (or lack thereof.)
More Than Poses
The true benefits of yoga are found in the transformation within the mind of the practitioner. This is more than just physical - It is the focusing of the mind and the energy of the body, and it doesn’t happen by accident; it is created by awareness and intention.
Simply learning to facilitate this type of focused mental direction will immediately produce benefits in the person that suffers from anxiety. A major part of anxiety is the feeling that you are not in control of your own situations. Yoga gives that control back.
When the practitioner learns that they can control their breath, then their body, and finally their own mind, the anxiety suddenly loses its rapacious grip. It has nothing left to grab on to, and simply dissipates like smoke in a gentle breeze.
