Yoga Back Exercise Precautions
While yoga can be beneficial for many areas of physical health, one of its biggest benefits involves helping those who have back problems. Whether it's problems with muscle spasms or more serious problems such as spinal stenosis, yoga can prove to be very effective if done correctly and carefully. However, for those who do have back problems and choose to practice yoga, there are certain precautions that should be taken into consideration.
Perhaps most importantly, people with back problems should be sure to have a qualified yoga teacher offering them instruction. In addition, it's best to team up with a teacher who has experience working with students who have back issues. This is particularly useful for those suffering from spinal stenosis or cervical spine disease, who may need to avoid certain poses or modify them. For example, students with spinal stenosis should avoid back bends that may extend the spine, and those with cervical spine disease should probably avoid headstands and shoulder stands.
If possible, it may be a good idea to observe a class before deciding if your back problems could hinder your ability to reap its benefits. For people who may have questions, many teachers are often very willing to speak with them one-on-one and even schedule private sessions to learn modifications to certain poses or other assistance that may be needed.
To make sure you limit the possibility of new injuries occurring, it's best to not perform yoga exercises when your back feels particularly stiff, tense, or tired. To ensure this does not happen, always try to practice yoga as early in the day as possible. Not only is your body generally more relaxed and refreshed, but your mind is also usually free and clear of the stress that comes as the day goes on and on.
By making sure you take these and other precautions into consideration, it's quite possible to have yoga be an integral part of your life. By using common sense and knowing your body, you can find that not only will your back feel better, but so will your mind and spirit.
