Working of Mitochondria
32 Views • Aug 06, 2024
Description
The classic role of mitochondria is oxidative phosphorylation, which generates ATP by utilizing the energy released during the oxidation of the food we eat. ATP is used in turn as the primary energy source for most biochemical and physiological processes, such as growth, movement and homeostasis.
Mitochondria also called the powerhouse of the cell. The energy required for various chemical activities needed for life is released by mitochondria in the form of ATP or Adenosine Tri-phosphate.
During oxidative phosphorylation, each pair of electrons donated by the NADH produced in mitochondria is thought to provide energy for the formation of about 2.5 molecules of ATP, after subtracting the energy needed for transporting this ATP to the cytosol
