HOLY THURSDAY (jeudi saint)
Is this a holy thing to see (est-ce une chose saine de voir)
In a rich and fruitful land, (dans un pays riche et prospère)
Babes reduced to misery, (les bébés reduits à la misère)
Fed with cold and usurous hand? (nourris d'une main froide et usurière)
Is that trembling cry a song? (est-ce un chant ce cri qui trmble ?)
Can it be a song of joy? (peut-il être un chant de joie)
And so many children poor? (alors qu'il existe tant de petits pauvres)
It is a land of poverty! (c'est un pays de misère)
And their son does never shine, (et leur soleil ne brille jamais)
And their fields are bleak and bare, (et leurs prés sont nus et glacés)
And their ways are filled with thorns: (et leurs chemins sont pleins de ronces)
It is eternal winter there. (c'est l'éternel hivers ici)
For where’er the sun does shine,
And where’er the rain does fall,
Babes should never hunger there,
Nor poverty the mind appall.
