Wilhelm Stenhammar: Snöfrid Op. 5 (1892)

Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871-1927) was a romantic Swedish composer. As many other Nordic composers, he studied first at home and moved later to Germany to hone his skills. His music shows a dramatic shift from an early Teutonic period into a Norse one at the second half of his relatively short life. His cantata Snöfrid is based on the homonym poem by Viktor Rydberg (Sibelius would compose a monodrama on the same piece) which tells the tale of a magic woman who guides the hero into the duty of combat. Still influenced by Wagner and Bruckner, the work conveys a truly heroic feel.

Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871-1927) fue un compositor romántico sueco. Como muchos otros compositores nórdicos, estudió primero en casa para marchar posteriormente a Alemania a mejorar sus habilidades. Su música muestra un giro dramático de un periodo germánico hacia uno nórdico en la segunda mitad de su relativamente corta vida. Su cantata Snöfrid se basa en el poema homónimo de Viktor Rydberg (Sibelius también compondría un monodrama sobre éste) en el cual se cuenta la historia de una mujer mágica que guía a un héroe al servicio del combate. Aún influenciado por Wagner y Bruckner, la obra posee una verdadera sensación heroica.
