Why the NY Post Cartoon Was Offensive

The New York Post cartoon incident brought to mind a moment in Dare Not Walk Alone. We post it here believing we all need to better understand the baggage that some words carry. In this clip, two black women described going to church with a white woman in 1964. The white deacon stopped them at the door and told the white woman "You're welcome to come in, but your little monkeys can't." These women were on the front line of the campaign to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964, landmark legislation from which all Americans have benefited. If they are not deserving of respect, who is?
