where did cows come from ?

Cows descend from the aurochs — a massive, dangerous wild animal — domesticated just once, ~10,500 years ago in Anatolia from a founding group of only ~80 females. It wasn't hunted into submission. The boldest, calmest aurochs self-selected toward human grain piles, bred with each other, and gradually changed. Every 1.5 billion cows alive today traces back to that single event. We didn't tame the aurochs. It chose us.

The full story is stranger than any domestication myth you've heard. A creature so fearsome Julius Caesar wrote about it, cave painters immortalized it 15,000 years before agriculture — and yet it quietly walked toward human campfires on its own terms. What followed rewired civilization: cows pulled plows, grew cities, triggered a genetic mutation that let adult humans digest milk, and spawned taxes, kings, and armies. Then the aurochs went extinct in 1627, replaced by billions of its own mellow descendants.
