What is Tik Tok? The TikTok application is becoming more popular every day, especially among young people. But what makes this social network of Chinese origin the seventh most popular in the world, with 800 million active users?

TikTok is an application that allows you to create and share short videos: from 3 to 15 seconds or from 30 to 60 seconds. It was created by the Chinese company ByteDance in 2016. It was first launched in China under the name Douyin and, the following year, to the rest of the world under the name TikTok.

At the end of 2017, ByteDance bought the Musical.ly app. It also allowed you to record short videos and put music on them and was very popular in the United States. Upon merging in 2018, Musical.ly users became TikTok.

The popularity of the social network grew especially since 2018. In October of that year, it became the most downloaded application in the United States. In April 2020, it reached some 2,000 million downloads on Google Play, the application market for Android devices.

The vast majority of users are young people, boys and girls under 20 years of age. In fact, according to the Statista portal, 6 out of 10 American teenagers use TikTok, and it is the third most popular application in that age group in the country.

The particularity of TikTok is that it allows you to edit and share short videos with songs, text and effects, original or provided by the application, very easily. The results are usually funny videos.

Videos with dance choreography, humorous content or videos in which the protagonists emulate singing the songs of their favorite artists are popular. But content created within the framework of "challenges" is also very popular. A user or a brand proposes a challenge, which can be for example a dance step, and those users who want to replicate it using the same hashtag or tag.

Its format is so popular that other applications have tried to copy it. For example, Instagram introduced the 'Reels' functionality in August 2020, with functionality similar to the video effects offered on TikTok.
