What are Call and Put Options?

Options http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/Options-spreads.html on financial markets are the right to buy the underlying contract at a given price. There are call and put options - calls are the right to buy and puts are the right to sell. If I buy a 1000 December ICI call it means I've bought the right to buy ICI in December at 1000 pennies.
