Watersnake Party

Subscribe! The “Snake Ball” is a rare occurrence that even seasoned outdoors people have rarely seen in the springtime. The snakes ignore the presence of humans during the mating season!

The large Northern Diamond-Backed Watersnake, scientific name Nerodia Rhombifer is not poisonous is often confused for a rattlesnake or a cottonmouth aka a water moccasin snake. The nonpoisonous watersnake with diamond shapes will swim away when threatened. The pit vipers will stand their ground!

Most people will simply avoid the snakes entirely calling them all Water Moccasins that immediately slither away. In fact, hikers passing by during filming did call the large harmless snakes either rattlesnakes or cottonmouths, both pit vipers. The watersnakes completely ignored the curious onlooking humans and that is true of anglers too, so their population is doing well.
