Description

Boys there speak like in normal life-situations, like about some girls, which they know. But when we speak about language, we can´t speak only about words. Every language have a big cultural traditions.
1. When Vick said something about Uta von Naumburg, we had see in in the image of Jessie the wife of Ekkehard II. Her´s monument stay in Naumburger Dom and Umberto Eco said once, that exactly this woman could be the symbol of the women´s beauty. Also this thing was very popular in Germany at the begining of XX century.
2. Gretchen is Margarete from Goethe's "Faust". It´s also symbol of German classic, literature and beauty.
3. Poetry, which Vick start to tell for Jessie it's a first, what come to his head. He tried to speak with her, when proposed something for coffee. We saw, that he didn´t it for first
customer. He did it just for speak with her more, but it wasn´t succesful. And he decided, that poetry would be much better. Of course, about love, and of course Geothe: "Neue Liebe, neues Leben". Now we understand also, why film named "Was soll das geben".
4. She doesn't answer him and we see, that he connects it with her lack of interest in literature.
5. Diotima - character from main novel of Friedrich Hölderlin "Hyperion". It's literature from Romantic period. But the character of Diotima come from Platon´s "Symposion". Diotima is a symbol of platonic love.
6. When friend of Jessie came, we understand, that she is from South Africa and come to Germany for learn the German language. With Sarah she has a tandem meetings, when they teach languages each other: English and German. Also, we understand, that Jessie doesn´t understand German very clear and connects her impressions about Vick also with literature associations. But her own associations connected with her culture: Nadine Gordimer is a South African writer, political activist and recipient of the 1991 Nobel Prize in Literature. Nadine Gordimer is here, of course, also not accidentally. She was one of the leaders of against forbidden the apartheid in South Africa.
7. Now game with colors of skin and stereotypes, based for a deep culture, we understand clear. Because only at the end of the film we see, that boy was from Germany and now he is typical representer of German culture with old and deep cultural tradition, and the girl is a representer of African cultural tradition in the South.
