Early chess computers were better at calculations than grandmasters, but worse at scoring, so the idea was born to pair the two to get the best of both worlds. It worked, but it didn't last long. Computers eventually became so sophisticated that they no longer needed human advice.

Are we now at a position in air warfare where human-machine cooperation still makes sense? That is the concept of a "loyal wingman", namely a human pilot who is relatively cheap but guided by AI. Watch out for a swarm of drones. Together they might defeat an enemy fighter in a dogfight. Or the drone could enter airspace with such tight defenses that it cannot endanger the life of the #pilot or the life of the jet.
