Description
This series will introduce us to one of the world’s longest rivers: the Mekong. All along its course over around 5 000 kilometres, from the Tibetan plateaux up to its delta in the China Sea, this river offers numerous fulfilling discoveries. We will come across its fascinating flora and fauna, the varied landscapes found in this region of the world: high mountains, wild gorges, tranquil lakes and even breathtaking waterfalls, which make the river’s descent difficult, but also very spectacular.
We will discover the countless temples located on its shores openly evoking Buddhism, which is omnipresent here, but above all, we will meet some of the 320 million inhabitants who live along the river, spread out over 6 countries: China, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. With its abundant production of rice, fruit and vegetables, but also flowers, the river’s basin constitutes what we could call the “world’s kitchen garden”, in the manner of Amazonia, which is often named the “world’s lung”.
As we will see, although countries, languages, histories, traditions and nationalities differ, the river indisputably remains the economical, social and spiritual link of what can be called the People of the Mekong. Many characters will guide us through this vast magnificent natural setting and allow us to question the impression these natural links leave on its people and the environmental challenges it must face.
