Description
Tongue Tied?
It happens to many of us at some point. We want to say something, and we are not able to do it.
Our emotions – anger, shock, surprise or just lack of confidence often dictate our choice of words or the words themselves. Yet, could it be a more technical physical reason?
In some people, tongue-tie is an anatomical problem. The tongue is restricted because of the way it is attached to the floor of the mouth. If these muscle attachments are too short, they prevent free movement, creating speech problems and more.
In infants, feeding can pose difficulties for both mother and child while nursing. Kids may find it difficult to chew solid food and tend to easily gag, vomit or dribble. Learning to speak clearly is also challenging.
The inability to open the mouth fully can lead to poor oral hygiene leading to cavities and gum disease. Teeth can be pushed out of alignment and will need orthodontic correction. The lower jaw often sticks out to compensate the limitation of the tongue.
In adults, speech and eating habits can affect self – esteem. Clicking or aching jaws, migraine and dental health issues are common. It is necessary to be aware that tongue – tie is a very real problem. Getting you and your kids checked will give you the timely help needed to avert far-reaching problems.
Simple procedures exist today at the dentist’s office using painless lasers to correct the tongue tie.
Once done, the tongue is all set to roam free!
