Tokyo Immersion in Logistics and Design Thinking

In late November 2016, six students and two graduates from the #UniSIM Logistics and Supply Chain Management and Business programmes went on a “Logistics and Design Thinking” immersion trip to Tokyo. The group was led by the Logistics and Supply Chain Management programme Head and Lecturer, Assoc Prof Tan Yan Weng and Dr Tay Huay Ling respectively, and accompanied by the programme’s Senior Lecturer Dr Park Byung Joon, and Ms Tan Lee Cheng, Senior Lecturer in the Business programme.
The key highlight of the trip for our students and graduates was the exposure to the design thinking methodology as a problem-solving approach, which was shared through a workshop conducted by Assoc Prof Chikako Morimoto at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. Besides learning in class about design thinking, the group also visited three Japanese firms that are distinct in their business models and logistics operations.
The group had the privilege to visit Yamato Haneda Chronogate, which has a state-of-the-art logistics facility near Haneda Airport. They also went to Suntory Tomi no Oka Winery and Warehouse Terrada, which offers exclusive storage solutions for valuable items such as wine and art pieces.
