When you stand here on the edge of Kerry Cliffs you are over 300 metres above the wild Atlantic below. As you take in this spectacular view and breath deep and feel the freshest of air in your lungs; your natural inclination is to turn to the west and gasp and wonder what are they? Two enormous rocks bursting out of the Atlantic in a race to the sky overhead and on some days it's a mission they accomplish. These of course are the Skellig Michael Islands. Let us speak about these Islands one at a time.
Skellig Michael
Skellig Michael is only one of three UNESCO World Heritage sites Ireland. It was awarded this accolade in 1996. "The Committee decided to inscribe the nominated property on the basis of cultural criteria (iii) and (iv) considering that the site is of outstanding universal value being an exceptional, and in many respects unique example of an early religious settlement deliberately sited on a pyramidal rock in the ocean, preserved because of a remarkable environment. It illustrates, as no other site can, the extremes of a Christian monasticism characterizing much of North Africa, the Near East and Europe." UNESCO WHC, 1996
