Description

Confused by Revit Category vs Family vs Type vs Instance?
In this tutorial I break down the Revit Element Hierarchy in simple terms. Master these 4 levels and you’ll stop making modeling mistakes, speed up your workflow, and control elements like a BIM Coordinator.
The 4 Levels of Revit Hierarchy: Category - The broadest classification. Ex: Walls, Floors, Doors, Roofs. Controls visibility + scheduling Family - Group of elements with similar use + parameters. Ex: “Door” family, “M_Concrete_Rectangular_Beam” family Type - Specific variation within a family. Ex: 900x2100mm door vs 1200x2100mm door. Same family, different Type Instance - The actual element placed in your project. Each wall, door, or column you draw = 1 Instance Why this matters in Revit 2026:
Understanding this hierarchy = faster editing, cleaner schedules, and fewer errors in BIM coordination. Change Type properties once = all Instances update. That’s parametric BIM.
