The Mahabharata Within Us

Why do we experience so much inner conflict? Because perhaps, somewhere within us, we are not a unified being. Our body may want one thing. Our subconscious mind may want another. Our conscious mind may pull us in a different direction.

And a deeper, psychic or soul dimension may be calling us toward something entirely different. The Mahabharata is not only an ancient epic. It can also be understood as a metaphor for the psychological reality within each of us.

In this archival talk from 2017, Pulkit Sharma, Clinical Psychologist, Psychoanalytic Therapist, Spiritual Counselor & Author, explores how an inner Mahabharata unfolds within us — competing desires, emotions, thoughts and impulses constantly pulling us in different directions.

We make a decision, only to change our minds. We want one thing yet do another. We move forward, then suddenly find ourselves pulled back.

According to Pulkit Sharma, psychological healing, therefore, is not simply about managing symptoms. It can also involve developing self-awareness, psychological integration and inner unity — understanding our conflicting parts and discovering what truly matters to us.
