A satirical, postmodern sci-fi adventure story adapted from the books by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson. The Illuminatus! Trilogy is heavily saturated with counterculture, conspiracy theories, secret societies, hallucinogenic imagery, and cognitive dissonance, while the film itself was crafted using principles of Discordianism, artistic appropriation, and numerous self-referential concepts. filmmaker's notes:
The Illuminatus! Trilogy has been widely considered an 'unfilmable' series of novels; therefore, I didn't film anything! Actually, the more I worked on adapting this film, the more the spirit of those books began to guide the work, and soon everything fit into place in a way I never could have expected. Whether you, the viewer, are reminded of specific moments from the novels, or how they were reinterpreted here, or even just the recognition of how much those books have permeated popular culture down to major studio pictures, I tried my best to capture all of it: the philosophy, the absurdity, the contradictions, and most importantly, the self-parody. And regardless of your appreciation or dismissiveness for this film, I hope, above all, it at least inspires you to pick up those books again and "keep the lasagna flying!"—MBD
