Leaves dropp when hearts fail
And curling to brown on bare ground
They trail.

The branches breathe,
For no burden (green-silk, round-
Red, flimsy-yellow) will weigh
The cares, the hopes, the tears,
Of a sad summer day
On their shoulder.

Black branches breathe
But, in the white sheet
Of snow, in no comfort.

If you remember
The love lost, and the hollow where
Your heart is, you will see leaves drop
And branches mourning.
