Suneha Theatre, Abbottabad Using Drama for Social Change

Marie stopes society in Collaboration with Suneha Theatre, Abbottabad have created a theatre play “Zaman Badle Ga” to spread the message about family planning and child marriage problems in far flung areas of KP Province of Pakistan. Suneha Theatre performed the play in five districts of KPK and their performance was appreciated by all the audiences.

Suneha theatre is an Abbottabad based theatre group working for the social change through creative ways of communicating the messages. Suneha theatre is currently working with Marie Stopes Society (MSS) to spread the message about family planning and child marriage issues.

Marie Stopes Society is a social enterprise that provides reproductive health and family planning services to the people of Pakistan. Registered in 1990. MSS is a subsidiary of Marie Stopes International (MSI), a UK based organization with partners in 43 countries around the globe.

International conventions prohibit child marriage and define eighteen as the age of adulthood. These laws are based on the argument that children and adolescents are not mature enough to make choices about marriage, and that marrying too young can lead to lasting emotional, physical, and psychological harm. Moreover, development experts say child marriage stunts girls' educational opportunities and income-earning prospects, and perpetuates poverty in communities worldwide, inhibiting progress toward national and global development goals and threatening stability.
There are as many family planning issues as there child marriage problems. Marie Stopes Society has been working the make the population aware of the problems and suggest the solutions.


In most of the rural areas the best method of communication remains the theatre and without theatre and drama its very difficult to spread the message quickly and effectively. People are attracted more to a drama group and keenly observe their words and expressions and it becomes easier to talk to them and educate them.
