Description

The documentary 'Sound by Garnet' by Kirby Communications chronicles one of North America's most beloved guitar amplifier makers, Gar Gillies from Winnipeg MB.

Gar's company Garnet Amplifier Ltd produced an estimated 50,000 pieces of sound gear between 1967 and 1987, many of which are still in use today.

Garnet Amplifiers were used extensively by The Guess Who, the biggest-selling band in the world in 1970.

Guitarist Randy Bachman credits Gar with giving him a unique sound, heard on hits including American Woman which became the first Canadian song to hit #1 on the Billboard charts and remains a national favourite to this day.

'Sound by Garnet' features interviews with Gar's friends and relatives, including musicians Jim Kale (The Guess Who), Gordie Johnson (Grady, Big Sugar), and Jason Nowicki (The Perpetrators); amplifier designer Pete Traynor (Traynor Amplifiers); Gar's former bandmates, family members and employees with Garnet Amplifier Ltd.
