Description

Snap, crackle,
lands his hand on her jaw.
Pop, goes the carpet-sweep
down on her head.
All I can think of is breakfast.
Why doesn’t he leave her alone?
Why doesn’t she kill him?
Why doesn’t she go to the phone
and call the Guards
to take him away?
No, again we are locked out,
again we walk cold streets
in shoeless feet, with sleepy eyes.
Little, muddied, naked toes
tipping past the station
afraid to venture in.

We stay in an old friend’s place
like many nights before.
No school tomorrow though,
Hurray!
Daddy won again,
so we can play all day,
while mammy picks her teeth
up from the floor,
we can play all day.
