Sonja Broderick - Shopping Companion

I reached for the fabric softener today
when a dead spider fell away from my hair.
I tried not to think how long he was there,
wandered to the legumes section,
thought how stiff he looked,
while I picked shined lemons.
I pondered his arthritic frame
an old one, maybe a grandfather.
In my house a large family grieves
for this fatally foetal corpse
who might have lived for weeks in my locks.
