Small plane collide in midair

A tragic midair collision in central Pennsylvania has left one person dead and two state troopers injured.

The crash happened Wednesday evening near Carlisle Airport when a Pennsylvania State Police Bell 407 helicopter and a Cessna 150 airplane collided at around 7:50 p.m., according to the FAA.

Officials said the police helicopter was conducting routine training when the small plane suddenly veered right and struck the helicopter from behind. The impact damaged the aircraft’s rotors and caused both to crash.

The pilot, who was believed to be the only person aboard the Cessna, was killed. Two Pennsylvania State Police troopers inside the helicopter were injured and initially trapped before managing to escape. They were taken to a hospital and are expected to recover.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said he was relieved the two troopers were expected to be okay and asked residents to keep them in their thoughts.

The NTSB will lead the investigation, with the FAA assisting as authorities work to determine what caused the collision.
