Shawna Burke - Sanctuary
4 Views • Jun 17, 2014
Description
I am hiding inside of a fortress,
Woven from cloth.
It rests in a hidden space.
My favorite walk in closet,
That I loved as a little girl.
I painted its walls, filling them,
With windows and flowers,
And a bright yellow sun.
So strange, I think, as a tiny figure appears.
I had always hid there by myself.
In my dream,
My reoccurring dream,
There is a young boy.
He does not speak with words.
His lips never part,
But rather, his eyes ask,
If he may take sanctuary,
Beneath my tent made of blankets.
I reach my hand out to him,
And hold his face in my palms.
We are broken.
We are hiding from the fist that waits outside.
I kiss his blackened eyes,
His bruises.
We hold onto each other tight.
We hope that the angry man,
Will never reach us.
