Description

The National Park Service has confirmed that the liner at the bottom of Washington, D.C.'s iconic Reflecting Pool was deliberately cut with a sharp knife or razor, causing damage to a recently installed protective seal. The incident, reported on June 9, also involved dozens of fence post caps being thrown into the water, according to court documents. The damage comes just weeks after the pool underwent a multi-million-dollar renovation ahead of the United States' 250th anniversary celebrations. While President Donald Trump previously claimed vandals caused a 300-foot-long gash and contaminated the water, officials have not identified any suspects or confirmed the full extent of the damage. Authorities have arrested several people on vandalism-related charges, though no direct link to the liner damage has been established. The Reflecting Pool will be drained again after the July 4 celebrations so crews can inspect and repair the damaged lining before reopening the historic landmark.
