Ashes of your love rain down from the skies,
so I keep my head down so they won't sting my eyes,
The smoke envelopes me, but the flames drive me out.
The tar fills my lungs as my heart fills with doubt.
You are a living effigy, burning bright for me,
but that self sacrifice just isn't my scene.

I'm sorry for you cause I can't return the favor,
it's sad but it's true cause I can't return those feelings,
for the flames of love can't melt a heart of stone.
See, it's simply out of fashion,
for a man to show compassion,
so I'm forced to watch you burn to death alone.

I'm a fire fighter for your flames of love,
You'll say, 'I'm burning, I'm burning for you',
but short of extinguish you, what can I do?
You insist on your fires of passion,
but I simply lack the compassion,
and you're the only one burning out of us two.
