This is all I need,
right here.
Cold stable chair,
cold smooth table,
pointed walls pressing in,
warm angle at one side,
candles on the table,
all singing a sweet song
that fills my heart
and makes the hurt a little less.
It’s all I need, this room-
You.
Cold stable chair,
cold smooth table
and a book on Stalin
in the corner, pressing in.
“Bloody Git, ” you’d say
“Marx is wonderful, Stalin is filth.”
I smiled then, I smile now.
All I need is that smile,
That Voice.
Candles on the table,
singing beautiful song,
beautiful sounds
from cold, dead things.
Like walking in the cemetery
that one rainy day
when the whole world sang.
“Who wouldn’t want to be able
to fly? ” you asked me
“That’s just silly.”
Then I knew: you are me
In another body.
