Description

Birth asphyxia (also known as perinatal asphyxia) is a medical condition in which a newborn baby does not receive enough oxygen before, during, or just after birth. This lack of oxygen can lead to serious complications, including brain damage, organ failure, or even death if not treated quickly.

Causes of Birth Asphyxia

Problems during labor and delivery, such as:

Prolonged or difficult labor

Umbilical cord problems (e.g., cord around the neck or cord prolapse)

Placental issues (e.g., placental abruption)

Maternal factors, such as:

Low blood pressure

Severe infections

Preeclampsia or eclampsia

Fetal conditions, including:

Infections

Anemia

Prematurity

Signs and Symptoms

Baby not breathing or crying at birth

Weak muscle tone or limp body

Slow heart rate

Pale or bluish skin color

Poor reflexes

Seizures (in severe cases)

Diagnosis

APGAR Score: Assessed at 1 and 5 minutes after birth (score below 3 is concerning)

Blood gases: To check for acidosis (low pH) in the blood

MRI or EEG: To assess brain injury

Treatment

Immediate resuscitation at birth (helping the baby breathe)

Therapeutic hypothermia (cooling the baby’s body to protect the brain)

Supportive care: Oxygen, fluids, medications

NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) care

Possible Complications

Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) – brain injury due to lack of oxygen

Developmental delays

Cerebral palsy

Seizures

Death (in severe cases)

Prevention

Regular prenatal care

Monitoring during labor

Timely delivery if complications arise
