it was a saturday
and it sure was a holiday
but on the road
it looked like any other day

i was one of them
driving down the street
a song on the radio
told me it's fun to live

then i paused
for a moment or two
here i was cruising
to buy a new jacket

but the person
on my right
had a largish frown
on his face

he looked late
for his flight
and his plane possibly
was leaving without him

the chap behind in a taxi
was on the phone
wheeling dealing
a shady business deal

the woman in neon pink
had a twisted smile
she could be scheming
or something dodgy

the teenagers clearly
were drunk at noon
possibly hopping bars
to swill more cold beer

the older man in a black car
was visibly forlorn
he looked as though
his investments had withered

an ambulance wailed by
within was a life
either arriving or departing
i couldn't see very clearly

the guy in the jeep was
going to meet his girl
the loser on the bike
was never to see his girl again

the eager beaver ahead was
going for an interview
the downcast slouch was possibly
fired fifteen minutes back

and then someone was
definitely running from the law
and another was about to
become a son-in-law

everyone was driving
on the same stretch of asphalt
but no one's destination
was the same

the road wasn't just a road
it was life itself
some on the way to heaven
some on the way to hell
