Penny Hemans - The Mask

you were watching me
observing my reaction
as we discussed the japanese
and their wearing of the mask
to protect the outside world
from the virulence of a cold
and the impact of their sneeze
upon unsuspecting innocents

then you exclaimed
'and what is behind your mask! '
a breeze of shock sent sparks
into the latent atmosphere
and trembling, I disposed of the
dishes at the sink, waiting to be dried
and found a new voice
at first, thready and weak

but then, rallied by a spiritual strength
I found the courage to respond
'be happy inside yourself, my friend! '
contentment is a gentle thought
a listening ear, a smile, a word of encouragement
as with those who meditate and look within
so their success glows
and the light burns with the force of grace
