Penny Hemans - It is never goodbye

The whirr of the propellers
the crack crack of the machine guns
the whoosh of the bullets
spitting, spit spit spit
thousands of them
like pulled teeth from a dinosaur’s gums
here they come
raining back at us
I yell at my pal
watch out!
don’t let those bounders get you!
he turns his helmeted head
straps hanging
goggle-eyed
and shouts
‘whacko Leonard!
we’ll trounce the blighters! ’
the plane dips and plays with the slipstream
from a Messerschmit fart
then from nowhere
a hellish dart smashes his window
his head is blood red
I cannot hold the red-splashed, slippery wheel
and the salty waves come up to greet us ….
goodbye my friend
is this the end?
or yet another beginning?
