Mexican Sombrero
bonnet from France
bowler on a City head
a cap saying 'Vodaphone'
all travelling along the New Cross Road

but it is Jamaica Jim's Stetson
precariously perched
in contrast to the ankled hemline
of his overcoat
that tells a story

of a blues man walking the city streets
his feet stepping like drumbeats
pacing in time with the trundling, thundering
traffic, exhausts blasting a gaseous tribute
to the days when soul sang out their message

'yeah baby
love is the way'
