Most of the wood was ripped from pallets, most pallets are made from various hard woods some of which are oak. you can use any kind of wood you like a faster way to make this is to use good 1x2 lumber from your local lumber yard. And you can chose to keep it looking all the same or stain (or paint )it various colors
