Norman Santos - Smoke

The quiant scent of tobacco
sifting through your atmosphere
and billowing lazy clouds
to delude you with
a fake heaven opposing
your plethora of demons
and the nagging echoes
of candid poetry

It crawled into the fathoms
of the cage you carry
past the furtive cobwebs,
past the cloak of amnesia,
past the fiundamental sentimentality;
it rummaged inside you
like the shapeless hands
of slow death

It started with a soft kiss
and it escaped silently,
without remorse, colors,
goodbye notes, or shapes
that you took no notice
of what was bereaved -
the most ornate theivery
is apathy - its demise
