The Nikon 1 AW1 is the world’s first digital camera to offer both waterproof and shockproof interchangeable lens. This camera is Nikon’s entry into the marketplace for rugged, waterproof mirror-less camera offering interchangeable lens, a marketplace where there they have no competition as they are the only maker offering interchangeable lenses on a rugged bodied camera. Based upon the Nikon Series 1 J3 model the AW1 is designed to meet the needs of photographers shooting under very extreme and challenging conditions.

The Nikon 1 AW1 is fully compatible with all of the Nikon’s existing System 1 optics, although those lenses are not waterproof and shockproof like the two lenses specifically designed for use with the AW1 body. The AW1, and its companion lenses, are shockproof. They will withstand a drop from a height of two meters (6.56 feet). Additionally the AW1 is fully functional and freeze-proof in temperatures as low as -10°C (14°F). The AW1 body is completely dust-proof and waterproof to a depth of 15 meters (49.21 feet). The covers to the HDMI/USB and battery compartments have a double-locking function to prevent their accidental opening.
