Night clashes in Turkey
Description
ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)
STORY: Riot police fired smoke grenades to disperse protesters in the Turkish capital Ankara.
Protesters supporting the Gezi park occupation clashed with police in the Sultangazi suburb of Istanbul on Wednesday night.
Marching in the streets of the suburb chanting anti government slogans, protesters attacked police by hurling stones and throwing molotov cocktails at armored police vehicles and water cannons.
What began more than a week ago as a campaign against government plans to build over an Istanbul park has spiraled into an unprecedented display of public anger over the perceived authoritarianism of Erdogan and his Islamist-rooted AK Party, leading to the worst riots in decades.
Three people have died and close to 5,000 have so far been injured.
Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, who has dismissed the demonstrators as "riff-raff", met a group of public figures on Wednesday to discuss the unrest.
