Turkey could deploy army to quell protests, as clashes continue
Description
No end in sight to the clashes in Turkey.
One day after several hundred people were detained by police, clashes erupted again Monday in Istanbul and Ankara.
In Istanbul, police fired rubber bullets to disperse several hundred striking union workers and leftists groups, who were marching in support of widespread antigovernment protests.
And in Ankara, police used water cannons to repel some 1,000 marching union workers, with clashes continuing into the night.
The protests, and the police response to them, have rocked the country for nearly three weeks.
On Monday, the deputy prime minister said the armed forces could be called up, if needed, the first time the possibility of a military role has been raised.
