Red Dead Redemption is set during the decline of the American Frontier in the year 1911, it follows John Marston, a former outlaw whose wife and son are taken hostage by the government in ransom in order for his services as a hired gun. Having no other choice, Marston sets out to bring the members of his former gang to justice.

The game is an open world, 3rd person, western, action and adventure game, in which players control John Marston. Players interface with the old west environment and encounter various enemies in combat, using numerous firearms. Various breeds of horses are the main form of transportation, each with different attributes.
