Description

The best location to find Virgin Island and Caribbean folk art and local products is the Native Arts and Crafts Cooperative. A 19th-century brick building adjacent to Charlotte Amalie's tourist information office, it specializes in items small enough to be packed into a suitcase or trunk. Examples include spice racks, paper towel racks, lamps crafted from conch shells, salad utensils and bowls, crocheted goods, and straw goods. The Cooperative allows locals to sell their artwork and handmade products directly to the public. Stock changes regularly but often includes calabash bowls, straw baskets and hats, African-inspired jewelry, colorful quilts, and scented candles and soaps, and handmade dolls. You can also buy hot sauces, "bush tea" (made from local herbs), home-brewed guavaberry liqueur (available around the holidays), and regional cookbooks. http://island-showcase.com/native-arts-and-crafts-cooperative.html
