The battle started on Feb. 19, 1945, on a tiny Pacific island called Iwo Jima. More than 70,000 U.S. marines landed to fight 21,000 Japanese for possession of the Japanese-owned island. Thirty-six days later, an American flag was raised atop Mt. Suribachi, leaving 27,000 Americans and Japanese dead and 20,000 marines wounded. Of the marines who died during WWII, a third were killed on Iwo Jima.
