moon batchelder - The Last Thing

the last thing i saw
before both eyes went blind
was a vision of every form
coming undone
and darkness dispelled,
and the shadows consigned
unto night and to hell
all were vanished
and gone.
until only light
could be seen anywhere!
like every last star had been
rolled into one!

the last thing i thought
before losing my mind
was the notion that everything here
is a dream.
the roles we all play
and what joys we might find
as we go through each day
from the slight to extreme,
are only illusions,
intrusive and warm;
and reality's never the thing
it may seem.

the last thing i did
before finally i died
was forgive everyone of their
various sins;
and crimes i had done,
as at last i took pause
with my arias sung
to receive the applause
of god and the angels
the cosmos and saints;
as all of creation
was rolled up again.
