Medical Interview Course

None of the conventional medical approaches worked for this problem. In the early Seventies, after I had completed my medical training, I tried biofeedback, which employs imagery, visualization, and relaxation. This had a remarkably positive effect. This experience made me deeply aware that I possessed a mind-body connection and that my mind could dramatically affect my health. It's a pretty basic realization, I realize, but as an obsessive-compulsive, hard-charging medical student I was totally oblivious to it. Following biofeedback I took up meditation, which was a natural transition, invoking my own eclectic methods.

By this time I had begun to immerse myself in Eastern spiritual literature, which I found extremely fulfilling. Reading about the mystical traditions throughout the world, Western as well as Eastern, became a serious pursuit. I had been raised as a Christian fundamentalist, and in college had become an agnostic in recovery from that earlier fundamentalist experience. I felt really short-changed by fundamentalism, which has little focus on inner life. Meditation and the mystical spiritual literature helped me gradually regrow my spiritual roots.
