### **Tips for Simple Addition and Subtraction**

#### **Addition Tips:**
1. **Line Up the Numbers:**
- When adding multi-digit numbers, write them in columns (ones, tens, hundreds, etc.).
- Example:
```
24
+ 13
----
37
```

2. **Use Counting Up:**
- Start with the larger number and count up.
- Example: 7 + 3 → Start at 7 and count: 8, 9, 10. Answer = **10**.

3. **Break It Down (Chunking):**
- Break numbers into parts that are easier to add.
- Example: 48 + 36
- (48 + 30) = 78
- (78 + 6) = **84**

4. **Use Doubles & Near Doubles:**
- Memorize common doubles (e.g., 6 + 6 = 12).
- Use them to solve nearby sums (e.g., 6 + 7 is just 6 + 6 + 1 = 13).

5. **Use the "Make 10" Strategy:**
- Adjust numbers to make a 10 for easier adding.
- Example: 9 + 6
- (9 + 1) = 10, then add 5 more → **15**

---

#### **Subtraction Tips:**
1. **Count Backward:**
- Start with the bigger number and count down.
- Example: 15 - 3 → Start at 15, count down: 14, 13, 12. Answer = **12**.

2. **Use the "Make 10" Strategy:**
- Adjust numbers to subtract in easy steps.
- Example: 14 - 9
- (14 - 4) = 10, then (10 - 5) = **5**

3. **Break It Down (Decomposing):**
- Break numbers into smaller parts.
- Example: 72 - 38
- (72 - 30) = 42
- (42 - 8) = **34**

4. **Think of It as Adding Up:**
- Instead of subtracting, think about what you need to add to get from the smaller number to the bigger number.
- Example: 50 - 37
- What do you add to 37 to reach 50?
- 37 → 40 (add 3), 40 → 50 (add 10) → **13**

5. **Use Fact Families:**
- If you know 7 + 5 = 12, then you also know **12 - 5 = 7**.
